With the Zen 3 architecture presented, the next laptop processors that will arrive in 2021 begin to be filtered: the AMD Rembrandt APUs. Far from Lucienne or Van Gogh, this family will be more powerful.
AMD has a more than deserved reputation in its APUs, being powerful and efficient products. This is something that is pursued in notebooks, but Rembrandt looks like it is going to come with the latest of the latest: DDR5 and USB4 . In addition, we will have RDNA2 integrated graphics, an architecture that we will discover next week.
AMD Rembrandt will come the family of APUs for notebooks dreamed
It strikes us that this news ensures that it will come with a 6nm process, when the Zen 3 chips will come with an improved 7nm process. Although the news assures that we will have new APUs next spring, there is no reference to which family in particular.
Zen 2 and Zen 3 will be used for the new products that AMD brings out in 2021. In the case of Zen 2, we will have Lucienne and Van Gogh; Regarding Zen 3, we will see Cezanne and Rembrandt. Don’t be scared by so many families, because each series has its goal.
The novelty of the Rembrandt brand , which stands out from the other families in specifications:
- 6nm lithograph , when all are 7nm.
- Support for PCIe 4.0 , while the rest follow with PCIe 3.0.
- DDR5 RAM support , although Van Gogh will also come with this interface.
- USB4 , being the next standard.
In no family will they go beyond the 8 cores in the AMD processors, as well as the RDNA2 integrated graphics that Rembrandt will carry will have the maximum configuration of all the families (12 CU). Knowing that DDR5 won’t be mass-produced until mid-2021, we don’t think this family will arrive in spring, but in 2022.
We do not have data on which semiconductor manufacturer will supply AMD Rembrandt processors with 6nm. We could say that TSMC is behind it, but we find it curious because AMD’s roadmap jumps from 7nm to 5nm.
It is true that we have seen said roadmap altered with Zen 3, since it was an architecture that was going to come with processors manufactured in a 7nm + process. However, the brand decided to continue with 7nm and transition to a more advanced process in Zen 4.
What do we know about Rembrandt processors?
As we have been telling you in our Review, Rembrandt will be a family that will succeed Cezanne in 2022 (according to our sources). In theory, they will come with the naming of Ryzen 6000 (G for desktop, notebook H) and its TDP will not exceed 65W .
The memory support would be DDR5-5200 and it will come with 20 PCIe 4.0 rails , all under the new AMD socket : the AM5 . In this way, we will enjoy RAM memories with 5,200 MHz frequency and NVMe SSDs that will provide us with the highest read and write speeds on the market.
Everything indicates that it will be a transition family from Zen 3 to Zen 4 : from 7nm to 5nm, previously passing through 6nm.
