Almost four years after its launch, the Nintendo Switch has managed to surpass the Nintendo Entertainment System in sales
When the Nintendo Switch was announced, many wondered how far the consoles would go in terms of international sales. After all, this console was announced amid the international failure of the Wii U. The Wii U was unfortunately one of the least successful consoles in the brand’s history. This led many to have doubts about what they could achieve with their own laptop, even if they saw some potential in it. Now, with more than 68 million units sold, perhaps those who had doubts can admit their “mistake”.
The latest report financial results of Nintendo corresponds to the period from July to September this year. In this, it was reported that 6.86 million Nintendo Switch and 49.81 million games had been sold. Thus, the Switch (68.3 million) managed to exceed the sales of the Nintendo Entertainment System, the company’s first large console (61.92 million). With these results, this portable is now the sixth best-selling console of the company. Who overcomes it?
- Nintendo 3DS (75)
- Game Boy Advance (81)
- Wii (101)
- Game Boy (118)
- Nintendo DS (154)
Within the next year, you might see the Nintendo Switch outperform one or two more of these consoles. Despite the economic recession and the lack of new exclusives, this console cannot stop selling. The 3DS managed to sell 75 million in seven years, and it seems that the Switch will reach these figures in 4 or a maximum of 5 years. There is a chance that the device will even repeat the legendary feat of the Nintendo Wii.
This year has been a bit slow for the Switch. Next year (maybe) will be the time for exclusives like the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the WIld.
