TikTok has come up with a new competitor named Zynn, which comes to be an almost identical clone except for one small detail: it pays users to sign up, watch videos, and convince their friends to join.
The app was launched in early May, and is now the number one free app on the Apple App Store in the United States and is also in the top 10 of the Google Play Store in that country.
Like TikTok, Zynn is geared towards viewing short vertical videos. What’s different is that it shows a countdown with a dollar sign in the middle that is shown above each video. As you watch the videos, the timer fills up and gives you points, which you can later redeem for money or gift cards.
Zynn creator Kuaishou is a startup that runs one of the largest video apps in the country. Kuaishou used the same technique of paying viewers to grow in China.
The company makes money selling ads, and this model is sustainable as long as it receives more money from advertisers than it pays users.
Kuaishou recently received a $ 2 billion donation from Tencent, the Chinese tech giant behind WeChat, with the aim of slowing down the expansion of TikTok.
Zynn not only pays to watch videos but also has a referral system whereby it pays users who bring friends to the platform. The app promises $ 110 (€ 99) if you get five people to sign up, as long as they use the app regularly later.
Like TikTok, the application takes you to see a video directly as soon as it is opened. However, if you want to earn rewards, you have to sign up. There is no option to create an account directly with Zynn, but it must be linked to some other service: Google, Facebook, Twitter, or your phone number. To collect your rewards, you have to link a PayPal account.
