Tencent continues to expand its arms throughout the video game industry by acquiring Digital Extremes, creators of Warframe, and Splash Damage, developers of Gears Tactics, following the purchase of Leyou Technologies for $ 1.5 billion (via PCGamer ). This other company, also of Chinese origin, acquired both development studies a few years ago.
Leoyou Technologies began as a meat processing company, but in 2014 it began its digital expansion in the world of video games with the purchase of the Canadian team of Digital Extremes, responsible for Warframe. In 2016 it did the same with the British studio Splash Damage, collaborators of the multiplayer section of Gears 5 and developers of Gears Tactics. In addition, he owns a 20% stake in Certain Affinity, who has participated in the development of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered and Halo Infinite, and founded Athlon Games, responsible for the development of the MMO of The Lord of the Rings with Amazon.
In this way, Leyou Technologis joins the long list of Tencent participations in the world of video games, where it has Riot Games and Funcom in full ownership, about 50% of Epic Games, in addition to participations in Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft or Paradox Interactive, among many others.
Nothing will change in the studies
After this important move, the studios involved in the deal have not been slow to make a statement about it, fading any fears from fans about the future of their games. Quite the contrary, both press releases describe this event as an opportunity to expand their ambition and creative freedom in future projects.
“We’ve always been dedicated to creating team games that build friendships and build passionate communities, and we strive to work with partners who believe in that mission,” says Splash Damage Co-Founder and CEO Richard Jolly. “In our many discussions with Tencent, it became clear that not only do they believe in that mission, but they will do their best to enable and empower us to carry it out. This will be a bold new phase for our studio, with an incredible range of ambitious games that deliver on what Splash Damage is all about. We couldn’t be more excited. “
From Digital Extremes, as after its purchase by Leyou, it assures in a statement that this movement will help them to remain independent at a creative level. The Canadian studio is only concerned with listening and responding to the concerns of its gaming community.
“Yes, we will continue to create great content for Warframe and remain creatively independent. Our focus will continue to be listening to you, our community, updating Warframe based on your feedback, and developing the kind of great stories, gameplay, and amazing new space ninja action you have come to expect from us. Tencent is well known for respecting the creative decisions and integrity of its studios, and for giving them the autonomy and independence to experiment, innovate and prosper.
At the moment, neither of the two studios has confirmed projects after Warframe and Gears Tactics. We will see that they are capable from now on with total creative freedom and the financial backing of one of the biggest technological giants in the world.
