The newest installment of Spelunky, Spelunky 2, has arrived on PlayStation 4 and its quality of the game will surprise many. It’s not uncommon for a sequel to lose itself in its own ambition, being a poor imitation of the franchise. Everything indicates that this will not be the case of the second installment of Spelunky, whose acclaim is already impressive. The title appears to be the highest rated indie game of 2020 and one of the best games of the year.
More critics still need to come in, but the results so far put it at the same high level as its predecessor. Maybe even higher quality.
With five reviews already available, Spelunky 2 sits with a legendary 91, up to a point above the original installment. Most of the acclaim comes from the title managing to recreate the magic of the first game, but still feeling like its own creation. Several of the reviews highlight that this title has taken the concept of Spelunky to new heights. They are not obvious to gigantic innovations, but they are changes that create a more refined experience.
Of course, this should come as no surprise, as this is a game made by Derek Yu. This designer is known for the commitment and dedication he puts into game design. Yu has participated in several documentaries explaining his philosophy when designing games. And if the critical and commercial success of the two Spelunky shows anything, it’s that Yu deserves this attention. This game will be released tomorrow for PlayStation 4 and on December 29 for PC.
