Michael Mumbauer, a former employee with a prominent position at the Sony San Diego company, has assured in a recent interview that the studio considered the possibility of carrying out the remakes of two weight exclusives of the PlayStation brand such as the original deliveries of God of War and Uncharted. This has been stated by the former worker in an online chat in which David Jaffe, director of the original God of War and Twisted Metal, among others, has also participated.
Throughout the conversation, Mumbauer and Jaffe talked about different aspects of his role while an employee at Sony San Diego Studios and how his job saw him overseeing a visual arts group that provided support to other Sony gaming studios, but eventually, his role began to shift which saw him move more toward remakes and remasters.
“Remakes and remasters were the things I was chasing after. So that’s why the dev team was built,” Mumbauer said in the conversation. “What I can tell you is that’s what I was chasing because I believed that there was value in doing something like a remake of God of War at the visual fidelity of today. Or, a remake of Uncharted 1 at the visual fidelity of today.”
It’s worth noting that Mumbauer never outright said that his team at Sony San Diego Studio began proper work on a PlayStation remake of any sort. Instead, he just notes that it was something he was at one point very much looking into. It’s also uncertain if Mumbauer was just using God of War and Uncharted as generalized examples of potential remakes or if they were properties that he may have actively looked into recreating.
He even goes so far as to comment that at that time Shawn Layden was president of SIE Worldwide Studios and demonstrated over and over again great interest in this type of project, that is, remastering and remakes. Said team still exists, is over 200 people strong, and is currently working on a new title, which some believe to be the rumored Uncharted 5. Maybe in the future, Sony will invest in remaking the original Uncharted games along with the God of War trilogy, but it doesn’t seem like that is happening any time soon.
