One of the hottest topics this year is rumors and speculation about the prices and release dates of the new Sony and Microsoft game consoles.
Months ago, a Bloomberg report suggested that Sony was having a hard time getting an adjusted price for the PlayStation 5 due to the high cost of the necessary hardware components. This fueled fears of a substantial price increase over the current generation.
Five months later, we still don’t know how much the PS5 is going to cost , but in recent weeks, rumors have been popping up regularly, to the point that Sony has felt the need for comment.
PlayStation Marketing Director Eric Lempel has talked about this week’s failed leak about the PS5 pre-sale date announcement :
“I think it is safe to say […] that we will let you know when the reservation can be made,” Lempel said in clear reference to the failed leak that pointed to reservations starting on Tuesday.
“It will not happen a minute in advance. At some point we will let you know when the PlayStation 5 reservation can be made. So please don’t feel the need to run and queue anywhere until you get an official notice of how that will work. ”
Leaks when a device is about to be announced are fairly common, but console manufacturers have a much better track record in terms of the confidentiality of their ads than smartphone manufacturers.
Earlier in the week, Roberto Serrano stated that the PS5’s price and release date would be revealed on July 13, and that reservation would be opened. On July 13 he came and went without any news.
“We don’t know what happened, we had nothing to do with it,” Lempel said of this leak. “I got a message from someone saying ‘people are queuing at stores’ and we had no idea why.”
At a minimum, we now know that PS5 stocks are not going to suddenly open on Amazon or other stores.
It seems Sony will make a very clear announcement in the coming weeks about the PS5’s price and availability, so you’ll be able to plan ahead for the reserve and secure a unit if you plan to upgrade to the next generation as soon as possible.
