With the passage of time, we have been seeing various Sony patents, which revealed to us how the new controls for the PlayStation 5 were going to be. The arrival of the DualSense brought with it great merit thanks to the haptic technology that it brought. Now then, a new patent from the Japanese firm has just surprised more than one, since it apparently wants players to use bananas as controls.
This new patent was registered on February 4 in the United States Patent Office. As detailed in the description, it seems that Sony wants users to be able to use any non-luminous object as a remote. This in order for gamers to find an economical alternative to the classic controls, which is why they propose the idea of using objects such as cups, bananas, oranges and more.
“The system comprises an input unit operable to obtain images of a passive non-luminous object held by a user as a video game controller. The system also comprises an object detector and an object pose detector to detect the object and its respective pose in the images obtained. The pose detector is configured to detect the pose of the object based on at least one of a contour detection operation and the output of a machine learning model that has been trained to detect the poses of passive non-luminous objects in images. ” it reads in the patent.
