It has just been half a year since PlayStation 5 arrived in stores around the world, and it is a good time to take stock of what has happened in this time and, above all, what is to come. They have done that from the Wired portal, where they have been able to speak with some of the important faces of the Japanese company, leaving important statements on the way, with which we can get a better idea of the future of PS5 and the new generation .
One of the most noteworthy points of the article is a statement by Hermen Hulst, co-founder of Guerrilla Games -Horizon Zero Dawn- and who has been in charge of PlayStation Studios since 2019. He indicates that the group currently has more than 25 games in development for PS5, and that almost half are new IPs . In this way, the growth in the company’s projects is evident and the commitment to new licenses, as they have done with PS4.
“There is an incredible amount of variety originating from different regions. Big, small, different genres,” Hulst says of new projects at hand for PlayStation Studios. At that point, not only AAA games will be important, but also independent developments from outside firms. The medium gives an example of the announced project by Haven Studios, a company led by Jade Raymond, or Kena Bridge of Spirits, developed by Ember Lab and which will arrive this August.
Among the exclusive games that have arrived in these months, they mention the commitment to Returnal, which just recently arrived exclusively on PS5. And they highlight that Housemarque, responsible for the game, is not even its own developer, which expands the options of the firm, with other options under its umbrella. They mention, of course, Insomniac Games, which now belongs to PlayStation and launched Spider-Man Miles Morales at the console’s premiere and in June will release Ratchet and Clank: A Dimension Apart.
All this effort in the premiere of the console has served to spend more time in front of the screen. According to Sony, from launch to the end of March, users spent 81% longer with PS5 than with PS4 in the same time frame. Here, the truth is that several aspects can influence. In addition to the increased number of games produced by PlayStation Studios, the pandemic also helps more to enjoy video games. “What you are seeing is the high demand during the pandemic in all aspects of consumer electronics,” says Carolina Milanesi, president and principal analyst at Creative Strategies.
We will see what is on the horizon for PS5 during its next six months, where several major releases are dated, but there are no specific dates yet.
