Metacritic published a list of the best games released in 2020. The highest rated title was Persona 5 Royal with an average score of 95/100, followed by The Last of Us: Part II. The third place went to Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age on PlayStation 4 (the release on Xbox One has an average score lower by 2 points). In the top five there was also a place for Hades on Switch and Half-Life: Alyx.
But it’s worth remembering that Persona 5 Royal is an improved and expanded re-release of Persona 5 – a game that was already extremely well-rated when it launched in 2017, ending with a metascore of 93. It was still likely that Royal was. to top it all.
Yet it is an impressive achievement. Right behind Persona 5 Royal was the exclusive companion The Last of Us: Part II, which looks very pretty at 93. And while it had a lot less reviews than Naughty Dog’s blockbuster, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age also scored 93.
The PS5 launch title Demon’s Souls rounded out the PlayStation top four, with a metascore of 92. It’s been a very good year for re-released RPGs!
