As expected, this is a very important N7 day, as Electronic Arts and BioWare have confirmed that a remastering of the Mass Effect trilogy, called Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, is in the works.
The new versions will not be full remakes: BioWare said its goal is “to modernize the experience so that fans and new players can experience the original work in its best possible way.”
“As game developers, we always expect our games to transcend their original platforms. Having the opportunity to remaster the trilogy means that the fruits of a decade of our work will endure and be experienced better and more clearly than ever. ” Wrote Casey Hudson, GM of BioWare.
“Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will include core single-player content and DLCs for Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, as well as weapons, armor and promo packs, all remastered and optimized for 4k.”
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is expected to be available in Spring 2021. More information will be revealed next year.
BioWare also said that a new Mass Effect is in development, but they had no details to share.
The news of the remaster is no surprise. The rumor machine started working in May, when Electronic Arts said it would release, among other things, “an additional title” sometime before the end of March 2021, which some outlets reported would be the Mass Effect Trilogy. The claim was unverified, but the site was confident enough to state it as fact.
Then, in October, a rating for something called Mass Effect Legendary Edition appeared on the South Korean Games Management and Classification Committee. That was followed earlier this week by tweets from Commander Shepard’s voice actors Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer, who said that a huge gathering of Mass Effect voice actors, all from the original trilogy, would take place on the November 7, for “something very special” and to celebrate N7 Day.
And then, during this week’s Q2 2021 financial report, Electronic Arts reaffirmed its plan to “announce the release dates of additional titles for fiscal year 21, including an EA Originals title and a remastered title.”
