Remember a few years ago the script for the canceled Shadow of the Colossus movie leaked online? This script was fascinating in that it revealed how to adapt an atmospheric game in the worst possible way. Give extensive dialogue to the protagonist, explain all the mysteries, give flashbacks a gigantic amount of time and much more. Imagine Shadow of the Colossus, but replacing its silent and mysterious protagonist with Tidus from Final Fantasy X. Now Sony wants to make a film of The Last Guardian!
According to insider Daniel Richtman’s Patreon, Sony Pictures is working on tape for The Last Guardian. The project is looking to do several castings for four protagonists: Boy, Tree, Ariana, and Ueda. The boy is the 12-year-old boy who stars in the game, waking up trapped next to Tree for mysterious reasons. Tree (whose original name was Trico) is the winged monster that awakens alongside Boy. Ariana and Ueda, a couple who are looking to find their daughter Mono. Both characters have been created exclusively for the film.
It is being written by Max Borenstein, the same man who created the script for Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island. Kevin Misher will be the producer, working from the producer Misher Films. I do not have much hope that this film will happen. Remember the Uncharted movie we’ve covered over and over for years? The same has happened with other video game movies, remember the Mass Effect movie?
However, a Metal Gear Solid movie is currently being worked on. So who knows, maybe The Last Guardian will manage to have its own movie.
