Figures suggest that God of War (2018) have exceeded 20 million units sold in the last twenty-four months
In the video game industry, critical success does not necessarily imply commercial success (and vice versa). A game like Killer 7 or Titanfall 2 was very well received by critics, but its financial results were bad or disappointing. On the other hand, games like Tom Clancy have not had good reviews lately, which has not prevented them from being big hits when it comes to sales. This makes cases like God of War more enjoyable, as this one was critically acclaimed AND has sold over twenty million units.
At least, that is what it seems. You see, The New York Times has covered the PlayStation 5. In their star article, they shared that 51 million God of War games have been sold. What is fascinating about this number is that it is the first time in eight years that the overall results of the franchise have been discussed. How long were they last time? 22 million. These results were before Ascension was released, a game that sold not a very memorable amount.
Taking this into account and taking into account that the PS4 delivery sold 12 million units in its first year, it would not be surprising if it has exceeded 20 million units sold.
This is important to take into account, as God of War will have a sequel in a year or two. Ragnarok promises to be a very eye-catching game (although not a single photo of it has been seen) and could be very useful for Sony in its attempt to dominate the current generation. Santa Monica is, without a doubt, one of the most important studios on PlayStation.
