The Cyberpunk 2077 video game is the big release of the year for PC and it looks like it will be one of the most demanding hardware titles.

The folks at Tomshardware were able to access the press version of the CDProjekt video game and have shared some pretty revealing performance results.

Probably the most interesting data from these tests is that the RTX 3090 cannot run the game in 4K resolution and with the graphics settings in Ultra. Nvidia’s flagship, the most powerful graphics card on the market, cannot run the game in 4K and graphics in Ultra even by disabling Ray Tracing.

These results are concerning, although it could also be a poor optimization. The game is going to receive a 46GB patch on the same launch day . This could improve optimization and correct bugs seen in the early version for video game portals. However, the optimization of the game in this patch was not mentioned.

Using Nvidia’s powerful RTX 3090, the Cyberpnk 2077 runs at an average of 46 fps in 4K and settings in Ultra Performance Mode. The lows drop to 39 fps. With an RX 6800 XT we can barely achieve 30 fps with these same settings.

All these tests are without Ray Tracing, but when we activate it the RTX 3090 drops to an average of 20 fps. Therefore, DLSS image rescaling technology is essential to increase frames per second. Sure this will suffer from image sharpness, but at least we can play fluently at 60fps or get close to that number.

Downgrading the resolution to 1080p (No Ray Tracing), things get serious. The GTX 1060 is not capable of reaching 30 fps, not even in Ultra quality. The RTX 2060 also falls short to achieve a stable 60fps.

CDProjekt commented that they have used Ray Tracing effects to improve diffuse lighting, reflections, ambient occlusion, and shadows.

Hopefully Cyberpunk 2077 can improve its performance during or after launch. We will keep you informed.
