As we mentioned in previous notes, this weekend was very special for Final Fantasy fans , as a virtual event was held, in which there was not only very exciting news about the franchise, but also important announcements and a one of them was related to the health of one of the Final Fantasy XIV developers.
At the closing ceremony on the second day of the event, all the managers who participated in it took the stage to thank the fans for their support and say goodbye to them.
Before the end, there was a very emotional moment after one of the main composers of the game, Masayoshi Soken, revealed that he had a very difficult time after being diagnosed with cancer.
CANCER DIDN’T STOP SOKEN
When it was Soken’s turn to speak, he revealed for the first time publicly that after the cancellation of the Final Fantasy XIV concert due to the pandemic, cancer was detected in 2020, which forced him to spend between 6 or 7 months in the hospital. .
The most shocking thing is that, in addition to having to endure the physical and mental exhaustion, Soken made the decision to continue working hard with the project and do the composition of the themes of the game even when he was in hospital during his chemotherapy treatment period.
FANS HELPED SOKEN GET AHEAD
It was because of the motivation that the fans had for the game and not wanting to disappoint them that Soken decided to continue with the project and write several songs, such as To the Edge , which in the end successfully debuted with version 4.3 of Final Fantasy XIV : “And seeing the reactions of all the players around the world helped me beat cancer,” said Soken.
The people in charge of the project, like the fans, knew nothing about it except for the main employees, such as Naoki Yoshida, and the sound team. This was because Soken didn’t want to worry anyone on the development team.
Yoshida recalled that Soken was one of the first to support the manager when he took over the project to try to correct it amidst uncertainty.
Although Soken took the moment calmly, it was very difficult for Yoshida to speak on stage, who knew from the pain his best friend was going through during his stay in the hospital, because not only did he carry the weight of chemotherapy, but he was aware of the lonely moments he went through because due to the pandemic they could not go to visit him.
SOKEN’S HEALTH IMPROVED
Fortunately, the cancer in Soken has been reduced favorably, so he was able to leave the hospital and be part of the event with a great musical number and assured that he will continue to do his best in game development.
Soken also thanked Yoshida and Square Enix President and CEO Yosuke Matsuda for their support.
In case you do not know Soken, we inform you that he is a Mexican composer who has lived most of his life in Japan and who has worked at Square Enix since 2001 and is currently known for his participation in Final Fantasy XIV , but has worked also in Drakengard , Mario Hoops 3-on-3 , Dawn of Mana and more.
After knowing this, Final Fantasy XIV fans will surely appreciate the great work that the artist did in his compositions. LEVEL UP recognizes the efforts of Masayoshi Soken and expresses its best wishes for him to continue his recovery.
