Following in the wake of what happened recently with Nintendo , when it suffered the greatest leak that revealed great secrets of its consoles , it is the turn of Xbox and Windows NT 3.5 that have seen how its source code has come to light. It is now known that the original Microsoft console system was a custom version of Windows 2000 . From the company they have spoken quickly about it: “We are aware of these reports and we are investigating it.”
This leak includes the compilation system, the development kit , the emulators used for tests and the internal documents , although at the generational heights we are in, the information is unlikely to be useful for hacking . Although it is true that there are already several emulators for Xbox, including CXBX, XQEMU and CXBX Reloaded , most have had stabilization problems.
We are aware of these reports and we are investigating itMicrosoftMicrosoft developed the first Xbox with x86 hardware in mind, but the console kernel was based on a simplified, custom version of Windows 2000 with DirectX 8 support . Unofficial emulators have been trying to replicate this core for years, but so far only around 40 games are supported compared to the 900 games available for the original Xbox.
Along with the Xbox leak, the source code for a near-final version of Windows NT 3.5 was also unveiled. Included here are all the necessary compilation tools to delve into the old operating system. Since support for this operating system ended in December 2001 , it is currently only used on a small number of computers worldwide, so again this code leak is not a significant security issue .
In connection with this, some companies have voluntarily released the source code of their products to encourage fans to develop modifications . We recommend you read how EA published the Command and Conquer Remastered or VVV that celebrated its tenth anniversary giving this type of information in detail . Microsoft did it a year ago, too, releasing internal MS-DOS data and allowing many retro games to be playable again .
