Although the Samsung Galaxy Fold is the most expensive smartphone that Samsung has ever released, this phone is not waterproof.
The moving parts make it necessary to have gaps in certain areas, making it difficult to waterproof the device. However, Samsung appears to be planning to launch a waterproof foldable smartphone in the near future.
On November 13, 2019, Samsung Electronics filed a patent with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) for an “electronic device that includes a waterproof structure” which also shows some other details of the possible Galaxy Fold 2.
New waterproof construction
The patent was published on May 22, 2020, and describes in detail how Samsung will make its next folding smartphone waterproof. It is a waterproof structure, so the parts inside the case remain protected against dust and water.
A folding smartphone has several open holes, especially around the hinge. By using waterproof elements, which are placed at specific locations within the housing, it is possible to prevent liquid from entering. The documentation describes in detail where the parts will be used to make the device waterproof.
While it’s admirable that Samsung wants to make its foldable smartphones waterproof, the question is what will add protection from water mean in terms of price.
Narrow and elongated notification screen
The patent also includes several images that show a smartphone with many similarities to the current Galaxy Fold. However, it also has a number of changes.
For example, the device is equipped with an external display that looks different from the current Galaxy Fold. It is a narrow and elongated screen, intended only for notifications. There have been rumors for some time now that Samsung wants to change the front display.
Some rumors suggest that the front screen will get bigger, while others indicate that the screen will get smaller to save costs, as in the patent.
Periscopic telephoto camera
In the back, we see a triple camera, similar to that of the Galaxy Fold. However, the third lens, with a square aspect, is striking, indicating that it is a telephoto lens with a periscopic zoom.
In the Galaxy Fold, the top lens is an ultra-wide-angle lens, followed by a wide-angle lens. The lower one is a 12-megapixel telephoto zoom camera with ‘only’ 2x optical zoom. It wouldn’t be strange for Samsung to follow in the footsteps of the Galaxy S20 Ultra by equipping the Galaxy Fold 2 with a periscopic telephoto lens.
