Japan has become a striking setting for the sale and development of video games, due to very recent changes. The Japanese population has moved away from home video games and closer to everything portable. After all, few countries love mobile games as much as this one, even having several country-exclusive titles. This meant that a console that was designed around portability would have a great chance of dominating the market. And the Nintendo Switch was able to do exactly that.
After three and a half years, the Nintendo Switch has become one of the best-selling consoles in Japan. Thanks to 77,000 units sold last week, the console has sold 15 million units. These fifteen million units put it ahead of consoles like the Wii (12.75), PlayStation 3 (10.47), and PlayStation 4 (9.22). It’s no secret that these three have been hugely successful in Japan, so the Switch’s results are even more impressive than they might first appear. It is a success like few others.
What’s the next big one to beat? For Nintendo, beating the Game Boy Advance (16.96) would be pretty big. And the good thing for the company is that it does not seem that the Switch is going to stop producing in the near future. The console is most likely in the middle of its lifetime. It would not be the first, nor the last time that Nintendo broke the records of a massively successful console.
All this has also been achieved thanks to gigantic exclusives like Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
