Remember the short era of the Wii U? For five years, Nintendo did everything it could to make its console find success, but it just didn’t happen. For more than having valuable exclusives like Bayonetta, Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart, the console lagged behind in sales. Later, even Nintendo abandoned the console to focus on its next release: The Nintendo Switch. Three and a half years after launching this console, there is no doubt that this was a good decision. The Switch has broken records for its dominance in the United States.
During the month of September, the Nintendo Switch came in first place when it came to console sales. The surprising thing about this is that 22 months have passed and in each of these the Switch has been in first place. This means that Nintendo’s small portable has broken a record that previously belonged to the Xbox 360 (21 weeks). Although the PlayStation 4 also broke its own records at the time, it could not withstand its competition for long. In this way, the new generation starts with the Japanese company in the lead.
2020 has been a bit slow for Nintendo, but covid-19 bears part of the responsibility. This year, the platform only had a few exclusives, such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Super Mario 3D All-Stars. More titles may be released next year, with some of the most anticipated being The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 and Metroid Prime 4. November will be the month for new consoles. Both the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5 are yet to hit the market. Can any of these defeat the Switch?
