Apple is developing a charging accessory for the iPhone in the form of an external battery that will be magnetically attached to the back of the device using MagSafe , according to Bloomberg.
Although some prototypes have a rubberized exterior, this accessory is not believed to act as a protective case like previous iPhone Smart Battery Cases.
The accessory is believed to have been in development for at least a year, but has apparently faced overheating issues.
Bloomberg notes that Apple is cautious when it comes to announcing charging accessories, after it had to cancel the AirPower charging mat in 2019, a year and a half after it was first announced.
The charging pack would join Apple’s current line of MagSafe accessories for the iPhone 12, which adhere to the back of the phone with the help of embedded magnets. Other accessories include wall chargers as well as credit card cases.
Rumors of this battery accessory first emerged after a reference was found in the iOS 14.5 beta code. Bloomberg notes that the reference has subsequently been removed.
In addition to the new battery pack, Apple is interested in allowing its devices to charge each other. Bloomberg notes that it had planned for its 2019 iPhone line to be able to wirelessly charge AirPods, but the plans were subsequently scrapped. The functionality is “unlikely in the near future , “ according to Bloomberg.
