A few years ago, Ridley Scott unexpectedly surprised us by announcing that he was preparing a sequel to Gladiator. The director, who at that time was fully immersed in his new films in the Alien saga, assured that he had begun to develop Gladiator 2 and that he would direct the film himself.

More than two years have passed since the announcement, and with the pandemic in the middle, not much has been heard on the subject again. A few months ago, actress Connie Nielsen, who played Lucilla in Gladiator,  assured that the sequel was still in development, and recently confirmed it again during an episode of Collider Ladies Night.

“I know it’s still going on, but you have to see when Ridley can. I know he had to do a movie or two before, and I think he’ll be able to focus on it later, but right now I don’t know where [the project] is at.” the actress declared. Nielsen also assured that she would love to be a part of the film and to play Lucilla again. “Obviously it would be amazing, and I think more people would want to see the movie. I think we’re all going to have to see it as a different, separate movie.”

“Some of the emotions and values that made Gladiator so powerful for so many people are the values that we talk about. Tyranny against freedom, and the will to do whatever it takes to free people. I don’t think it would have been the same. if it had simply been a spectacle, it had to exist within a sphere of values. ”

The Gladiator sequel is expected to focus on Lucius, Lucilla’s son and Commodus’ nephew, who was played by Joaquin Phoenix in the original film, as Máximo seemed to have made a huge impression on him as a child. The time that has passed between the first movie and a supposed sequel would certainly allow Nielsen to reprise her role as Lucilla with an adult Lucius and a recast for the character if necessary.

Of course, Ridley Scott does not rule out bringing Máximo Décimo Meridio and Russel Crowe back for the sequel, although we will have to see what happens on that front.
