Godzilla vs Kong was raised as a great cinematic event, but also as the provisional ending of the Monsterverse. For that reason, the film does not have a post-credits scene, as the previous ones did. But its huge box office success, on HBO Max ( and critically too) has caused Legendary to reconsider, and the next movie is already underway.
The Hollywood Reporter anticipates that the production company is already in talks with Adam Wingard, director of Godzilla vs Kong, to direct it. At the moment, no more details are known, nor if it would be a sequel to Godzilla, Kong, both or even some other monster like Mothra. But, according to THR, a title has already been heard: Son of Kong (the Son of Kong).
Of course, Wingard has a tight schedule, and may not be able to join as a director: he signed a sequel to Face to Face with Paramount, and shortly after he also signed with Warner to direct a live-action adaptation of the Thundercats cartoons.
So far, no Monsterverse directors (Gareth Edwards, Jordan Vogt-Roberts and Michael Dougherty) have returned to the director’s chair. Nonetheless, Vogt-Roberts has stayed at Legendary, and will direct a live-action Gundam movie … but for Netflix instead of Warner Bros.
If the project finally goes ahead, it would make sense that they will adapt Kong’s son, since that same title had the sequel to the original King Kong, released in 1933 and directed by Ernest B. Schoedsack, in which on a new expedition to Skull Island They find the gorilla’s son, who is albino.
Of course, the end of Godzilla vs. Kong left the doors open to many more options … Wingard himself was very involved in the action scenes of the film, as well as in the plot of the Hollow Earth , so Legendary wants to keep him at the wheel of the Monsterverse, whose continuity it is already practically guaranteed.
