Until a few days ago, it was just a rumor, then more specific information appeared, and now we have received an official confirmation. Amazon has reached an agreement with MGM and for the amount of $ 8.45 billion, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer will be merged with the corporation responsible for the Amazon Prime Video platform.
In the official statement, we can read that Amazon will help “preserve the heritage and catalog of MGM films”, and at the same time the transaction will help other viewers reach many of the films prepared by the company.
It must certainly be remembered that the MGM library contains over 4,000 productions and several thousand episodes of series and TV programs. On the list, apart from the aforementioned “James Bond” and “Rocky”, there are also such productions as “Hannibal” or “The Handmaid’s Tale”.
It is currently difficult to say what will be with the latest MGM projects, but Amazon should confirm all details in the coming weeks. However, the corporation confirms that the cooperation is to ensure one thing – MGM will still be able to create the best movies, but probably a large part of them will already be available on Amazon Prime Video.
It is worth adding at this point that although “James Bond” has a new home, MGM is not the only company that has the rights to this IP. The label shares the brand with Eon Productions and it is this entity, thanks to Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who develop new projects in the Agent 007 universe – they are responsible for marketing, casting or distribution.
