The game of the year The Last of Us Part II , without a doubt is one of the best titles of this generation, but it has not been without controversy. Since it came out, a number of players have expressed their excessive dissatisfaction with handling the character Abby with multiple negative comments on social networks. This hatred reached such a point that the Naughty Dog studio denounced a campaign of harassment against Laura Bailey, by putting her voice and body in the character. Months later, the actress has spoken out about her role as Abby.
I didn’t expect so much hate
The actress behind Abby from The Last of Us Part II has said she knew the character was going to provoke backlash, but did not anticipate the scale of negative reactions she received. In an interview with Game Informer, Bailey added that the leaks had a role to play in the fiasco because people were unable to experience the story in context. The actress herself, initially disliked Abby when she started playing, but eventually realized that the character was not meant to be liked.
“It was tough, but I think it’s an amazing story, and I think Abby is, man, one of the most amazing characters I’ve ever played. He knew the story; I knew what I was getting into, and when ‘Day One’ with Abby rolled around, I still didn’t like Abby. I didn’t like my performance. I didn’t like the character. I remember playing for three hours on “Day One” as Abby and talking to [my husband] Travis, and I said, “I don’t like what I did. I’m not well. This is terrible. I don’t know how they chose me. All these years of work are in vain. ‘ And Travis said, ‘Just shut up, come back and keep playing because you’re obviously very biased right now.’ And as I kept playing, I thought, ‘Oh okay, I just had to acclimate myself because I didn’t like him. I didn’t like Abby.
Without a doubt, these are surprising and unexpected statements. Bailey didn’t like Abby’s character at first, but she never imagined all the hatred that would come with the character after the worldwide release. Recall that after 6 months of The Last of Us Part II release, Sony released a trailer to learn about Abby’s story to learn about her past, present and the motivations that led her to take revenge on a much-loved character in the game.
